I have a wood chipper with 10 HP Tecumseh, same noise issues. The real problem is the engine runs at the governed limit all the time the machine is operational, to have momentum power to chop and shred. It never idles down to give the ears a rest.
My solution is to always wear ear protection. Single use foam ear plugs plus head sets. Noise = Power = Progress... "Back to Work".
