I do the work, the A&P/IA "supervises" and does the inspection. It's called
an "owner assisted annual". I found a NOS replacement upper cowling nose
stamping at a really good price and decided that this was the year to
replace the cracked and patched over original part. That led to fabricating
a new oil access door on the side of the cowling as well. Then I found that
the carb heat airbox was cracked - which the IA missed in his inspection.
That led to sourcing used but serviceable parts and re-building the airbox.
The oil sump had started leaking, enough that I was smelling burning oil
from it dripping on the exhaust, so that resulted in pulling the engine to
get the sump (oil pan) off, a new gasket, trying to flatten the mounting
flange that is dimpled from having been over tightened some time,
re-installing, etc. We also found some corrosion on the battery box mount
and three of the mounting rivets, so that is being repaired.
The joys of maintaining a 62 year old aircraft, even though it has less
than 5000 total hours. No, I couldn't keep and fly it if I couldn't do the
work myself. Luckily, my IA trusts my work and even asks me to help him
sometimes with his own aircraft.
