Our deer season is broken into two parts, the first two weeks of December are shotgun, then the second two are muzzleloader. Interestingly muzzleloaders can be rifles but no cartridge rifles are allowed. As with roundball hunting shot placement is critical. Slugs and roundball should go in the "engine room", the lungs or heart. As you've found they don't do well with bones. I recently read a history of the 1953 Enfield rifle which was the first rifles musket in general use. At the time there was much discussion about the destructive capabilities of the Miné ball vs roundball. During muzzleloader I'll be using 450grain "Buffalo bullets" out of my .54. Those go into the shoulder and break the hell out of whatever they hit.Actually when I'm hunting alone I'll probably always carry the muzzleloader, it's much more accurate and fun to shoot than the shotgun. The guys in my hunting group already think I'm weird, no need to remove any lingering doubts... Curt

I had an experience of zero penetration from a Rem 12 ga. slug fired from my 870. It struck a good-sized whitetail buck in the shoulder at about 45 yds. It flattened the slug to the shape and size of a silver dollar, and slid up to the neck just under the skin on the near side. The buck fell away from me, and the second shot hit the heart. I will be impressed if the new trigger turns that pattern into a group. If rifle is legal in your area, that other group will put venison in your freezer for sure. That's 50 yards with a rifle I hadn't shot for at least 20 years. The big holes are indeed 12ga. I put the trigger kit in it today. Trigger pull is much nicer now. I need to find time to get back to the range and try it out.
