For the last year or 2 our 11 year old Maytag front loading washing
machine has sounded like a jet taking off when it starts to spin. Very
loud bearing noise. There is no official repair for this problem, the
solution from the manufacturers is to replace the outer drum assembly.
The problem is the bearing seal in the back starts leaking them takes
out the bearings after a while. They are just like wheel bearings on a
car with an inner, outer and a seal. There are guys on Amazon and ebay
that sell the kits. The job requires nearly complete disassembly of the
machine. The hardest part is wresting the drum in and out of the
chassis after you get everything disconnected. The actually replacing
of the bearings after you get the tub it is just like replacing them on
a car. From start to finish the job was right at about 3 hours and $40
for parts. Machine is whisper quiet again. Much better than buying a
new washer/dryer set.
