My friends don't understand why I don't want to do paintball but its my
existing firearms training. I can't imagine shooting anything I didn't intend
to destroy...

Even at a higher level -- you always handle a firearm as if it is
loaded. Even if you have unloaded it and cleared it, you would NEVER
point it at someone, much less pull the trigger.
