Why not just have the engine run a generator and an air compressor?

I've got a wild idea going here. I'd like to take an old 240/220 engine, make it a 2cyl to run a gen set, and use the other 2 cyl for shop air. Can this be done? If I think correctly, pair up 1&4, 2&3 and the engine should remain fairly balanced. Then what I'd do is seal off the intake/exhuast and valves for the air compressor cyl's, tap into the injector holes for vacuum check valves and the glow plug holes for pressure check valves. Obviously I also need a tank and pressure relief/control. Any one tried this or have ideas how it could work? I'm thinking the engine could provide 110/220v, heat/a.c., & shop air. What more could a shop need? Run it on WVO or home brew BioD, and it's CHEAP.....
