For practical reasons, fewer people now experience a tax benefit from donating a car to charity. Your itemized deductions need to exceed the current standard deduction. Recent tax code significantly increased the standard deduction enough that even with my modest retirement income and no mortgage, I never come close to exceeding the standard deduction.
