I thought you were the first guy to tell the lists that the book sized packs would actually start a 617. I bought a couple of tiny Stanley packs on clearance at World of Walton 2 years ago. They need to see some voltage to determine that they're hooked up properly before they'll send power out. Mine won't start a car without some help from the car's battery, unless it's a 4 cyl in warm weather or with synthetic oil, but for $11 each I'm not complaining. When the Saturn (when it had a Delco battery with a weak cell) barely started at -13 and didn't start at -18 the next day, the Stanley pack got it going. I replaced the battery last December, knowing it didn't have another winter left in it.

Now I keep one on a shelf by the lawn mower, as I'd rather jump start the thing twice a month than pay $80 for a new motorcycle battery. Mowers that take mower batteries (or have room for a car battery like an old Graveley or Cub Cadet) are preferable to mowers that take motorcycle batteries.
