In Michigan, I have three days from date of purchase to title and

Wow that's not much time. In Indiana it's 30 days I think, maybe 45?
If I don't title it within 30 or 60 days, I forget which, there's a late
fee, something like $15-25.
The three days is the longest I can drive it without registration, and I
better be on a pretty straight line between point of purchase and my
home when I get pulled over for driving without a plate, because that
grace period is for purposes of getting it home, not driving it around.
Again, I'm talking long established law, which might have COVID
relaxations on enforcement now that I can't just wait in line at the SoS
office for title transfer papers and registration.
