Sticking valve.  They tend to aquire deposits on the stem, preventing 
them from closing properly (and in fact, may be actually shoved nearly 
closed by the piston).  Needless to say, all the symptoms of low 
compression, and if the stem cleans up, it will go away.

Easy to check, just pull the intake and take a look.  Excessive 
deposits are obvious....
