It will work either way - it doesn't care which end is connected to what.
I've heard them called a "toner" - puts a "tone" signal on the wire, and
has a receiver to hear where it goes. Since it goes into conduit (I
assume metal?), you'll need to go to all possible termination points to
listen for the tone.
One possibility that comes to mind is a big ventilation fan somewhere
(since I just installed a small one in the hangar).
