Good idea. #2 is even cheaper than WD40, and probably has a lot
more parafins in it.
But WD-40 is specifically designed to displace and repel water.

I haven't done lots of testing, but I generally use LPS3. It is a
waxy, spray on lubricant. I used it heavily on outdoor security camera
housing hardware. It lubricated well and prevented further rust.
I learned of it when working with a general aviation mechanic. LPS2
and LPS3 are major contributors to the unique smell of the inside of a
Cessna. So while my 240D doesn't fly like an airplane, it can smell
like it does...
I heartily recommend LPS2/3 for fighting the formation of rust. WD-40
only works if you spray it hourly!
