WinDoze systems can be configured to automatically grab updates. That is how
my work computer is set and when I walked into work today I had to reboot
due to updates.

Alert on Critical Microsoft Messenger Service Vulnerability
(August 10, 2006)

***This message is from the LANL Computer Security Incident Response
Team (CSIRT)***

We have been informed by US-CERT that there is serious concern about a
critical vulnerability in the Microsoft Messenger Service (MS06-040).
This impacts systems running Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Windows
Server 2003.

Exploits are now publicly available, though attacks have not yet been
verified. A remote attacker could use this vulnerability to gain
complete control of a vulnerable computer system, including program
installation, data corruption, and the creation of accounts with system
level privileges.

Please note that installation of this patch requires a reboot. If there
is concern that a reboot may disrupt computing processes or destroy
unsaved data, we strongly recommend that you install the patch manually
so that you may control the timing of a system reboot.

Patches may be downloaded manually from the Microsoft update Web site at
https://update.microsoft.com/microsoftupdate/ , or run "Windows Update".

System administrators are advised to have all Windows (2000, XP, 2003)
servers patched by COB Friday, August 11th.

Computer users are further advised to ensure that "realtime protection"
is enabled in antivirus software. The Symantec antivirus system will
detect the buffer overflow associated with this vulnerability, but only
if files are inspected as they are opened.
