Ain't it amazing how much effort some people put into stealing from others? There's a lot of scams surrounding ATMs - it has made some very distrusting of them. Along with the scam you mention some thieves place saranwrap over the opening somehow so the card will jam - until the customer goes away frustrated and the criminal goes to the machine and withdraws the card because he knows the secret. There's more to it because they were getting the pin also but I don't recall how they did that.

All the new technology of the last 20 years has really opened a lot of doors for criminals -
