We have been giving our freedom away little by little for years. In exchange for free education, social security, income tax, and all the other things the govt do "for us" - they all cost us - a little here, a little there.

We have little freedom to do as we choose. The Freedom of Speech is a good example - the recent Fiengold-Mccain finance reform act stated organizations cannot publicize politicians voting records or stance on important issues. Not just the NRA - altho they're included - but any group - the AARP for example cannot say so and so voted against thie or that during the 60 days before a election - just the time the people are *freakin* interested in the voting records for a change!

Only News organizations - like friggin *impartial* can publicize politicans records during this critical phase. The NRA challenged it in court - all the way to the Supreme Court and lost - that little freedom didn't seem very important to them.

We all now about the restrictions on guns - supposedly we have a God given right to self defense - sadly some of need a gun to be able to defend ourselves and families against all manner of criminals - but at the least we must ask permission to buy one - and permission can always be rescinded whenever those in power change their minds. So, it;s not a God given right after all.

SOrry - I'l stop now.

If you want a stinging critique on how 'free' our consumer/consumption-based system really is, find someone who emigrated here from the countries of the
former Soviet Union, AND is old enough to remember the old system AND
experienced their opened-up society prior to emigrating here.

If you have any Disney-esque conceptions about our society (and I am
speaking of both the U.S. and Canada when I say that), you won't like their
take on us at all.

In a nutshell, they feel our current state of personal freedom is a joke,
our economy is about to self-destruct, and our society is extremely
corrupt.

Personal freedom in the US a "joke" compared to the Soviet Union?
Please. The problem I see with society here today is people not
wanting to accept the responsibilities that come with freedom -- not a
lack of the latter.
