An experience such as we have had seems to be what it takes to really understand. I no longer have a problem with pulling on walks as I have been using a "Gentle Leader". About 50 cents worth of material that sells for @ $30 bucks at a pet store. It goes around the snout just below the eyes and also fastens behind the neck. The leash attaches under the chin so when a dog starts to pull his head goes down. Just about eliminates pulling and walking Jax is easy as he almost never pulls anymore. Doesn't hurt him, or interfere with his mouth, though he is not crazy about it. The 'over the snout' is also a dominance thing. I heartily recommend them. The problem I had was I didn't take the time to put it on him the other morning and just clipped the leash to his normal collar. With the 'Gentle Leader' he would not have been able to pull so hard. I find I use it more and more after that. BillR

I have a scar from when my previous Dobie charged after a rabbit while I had the nylon rope around my hand - I have had to start thinking more like horse handlers, who do not have loops of any type in their leads because they know that if the animal wants to charge, it and you (hopefully hand and arm still attached) will move too.
