Not to sound too pessimistic a note, but the transmissiion on my 83 300TD failed at 140K miles with similar symptoms to yours - wouldn't move in either direction. I had to ahve it rebuilt, and the same thing happened again at 200 K miles so I had it rebuilt again for another $1,700. I'm now at 280,000 miles 12 years later and it seems to be doing fine... The driveability of the 83s is great but you pay the price. The 85 transmissions were much improved and seem to last forever but these cars are less exciting to drive.

Well, if the chances are that low then that is probably wheat happened to mine..........My luck runs like that. In thinking of what the car has been doing lately, I recall that last night when I parked it I was letting it idle for a couple minutes( I live on a large hill so I figure it's very good for the turbo) and heard what i thought then was an exhaust leak up by the tranny.......My exhaust system is in pretty rough shape so I wasn't too worried about it. Sounded like a rust hole in the pipe or a slightly burnt out gasket would. I am not sure if that is related or not but I don't hear the noise today so........... So what years and models do I need to look for to get a replacement tranny? The pick and pull had a few last time I was there.......I wonder if there is a good tranny.........
