I agree but they can be spendy...

Then I got thinking about the 2 work laptops I've had, both were "desktop
replacement" systems.
The first was a Dell Inspiron 8500, now I've got an HP nw8000. Both are
excellent machines. The Dell got handed down to somebody in tech support when I
moved to training and the HP was handed down to me.
I like the Dell marginally better, its thinner, has better ergonomics and a
slightly bigger screen. The HP has better battery life and its is brighter.

Also remember I travel a fair amount and I carry the laptop between work and
home each and every day so the both have gotten beaten around pretty good.
What I'm getting at is pretty much all good name brand laptops are good stuff.
Find one based on how its ergonomics work for you, thats probably the most
important part.

Bob,

I agree wholeheartedly with Allan..... Go for an Apple MacBook or
iBook G4.

I've had my iBook G4 for close to two years. Been bulletproof. No
Viruses. No problems. And Mac's are a lot less complicated to run
than PC's......

Take care,

Chuck

I vote for a ThinkPad T40, T41, or T42 as well. The comparison to an
'80s Benz is apt. (Lots of metal where most other laptops have
plastic!) You can buy certified used ones direct from IBM... no need
to mess around on eBay if you don't want the hassle. $500-$600 will
get you one that will run Windows XP nicely. I hate to say it, being
a Mac user most of the time, but these are a much better deal than any
Apple laptop that will run OS X usably fast (I don't consider Hursty's
Pismo usable).
