I still have the lower ball joints too,  The upper control arm is the  one 
that goes bad.

When I stopped by MBI Motors, the largest indy dealing with Mercedes around 
here, one of the mechs told me that the lower ball joints tend to go out 
before the uppers since they are more susceptible to having torn boots.  Oil 
gets out, water gets in, then the rust and the groaning starts (like mine's 
doing on the passenger's side right now).  The UCA bushings weren't brought 
up, but I'm going to have them inspect all of the front end components along 
with the rotors and wheel bearings while it's on the rack since it must all 
be removed to get the ball joint off.
