Race cars don't have air bags. They have full roll cages, 6 point restraint systems and head restraints. If we had the same on our cars then we would not need airbags. But then driving would not be near as much fun.
Air bags were not developed for people who do not wear seatbelts, they were developed to work along with seatbelts because a seatbelt will not prevent you from over-extending your spine & neck and a seatbelt will not prevent you from having a collision with the steering wheel. Seat belts were invented to prevent you from being ejected from the car. Shoulder harnesses were an improvement over just seat belts, but not much of one. Airbags are a false safety thing and a seatbelt with a restraint system is gonna do more in a serious crash. However if the missus feels happier to be driving a Swedish brick with a bag then why not.
