Synthetic - change it at regular intervals and drive it at high speeds 
(60-70 or more) for long distances.  Our 91 had carbon build up - I also put 
some stuff called Ferox 230 from www.ferox230sales.com - bought 4 bottles of 
concentrate specfically designed to break loose carbon.  Each bottle treated 
6 tanks od diesel IIRC.  Worked like a charm.  No more carbon.  ;-)

As far as sludge, the synthetic oil (I like Mobil 1) will clean it out over 
the course of 2 or 3 oil changes.  But high speed drives will help an engine 
tremendously.   Also, if the engine suffers from sludge buildup the AT 
probably does also - again, Mobil 1 ATF is the answer - change it every 30K 
miles along with the filter -
