Yep - as hard as it is to believe, we used to tune all sorts of engines without the benefit of a single computer! ;-)
I used to adust the carbs on my MGB using a rubber hose - one end in my ear the other just in the carb throats. I'd listen for a similar "Hiss" to know when each carb was adjusted the same. Ahhh -- the good old days.
