.50 cal can mean a lot of different things, can't it?
.50 cal smokepoles, 500 S&W pistols and carbines, or

There are at least a couple of states that allow primitive cartridge rifles,
usually with period correct weapon design. Lets you use a Sharps replica,
or even a $200 NEF single shot (I've got one of those in 45-70, and I know
somebody who had a 32" H&R rechambered to 45-120)
