Theres no reason you can't watch 4x3 material on a 16x9 tv and in fact an LCD 
tv is an advantage for that since it won't burn in. Plasma apparently burns in 
BADLY...
16x9 on a 4x3 is letterboxed, those bars on the top and bottom.
4x3 on a 16x9 is pillar boxed, it gets bars on the right and left.

People who have a large amount of otherwise-unavailable material
archived in 4:3 format might disagree with you!  A small subset of the
public, true, but one that is going to be inconvenienced for no good
reason when the switch to 16:9 is forced on them.  (Why does this
remind me of our discussion a few months back on the discontinuation
of analog cellular service?)
