Theres no reason you can't watch 4x3 material on a 16x9 tv and in fact an LCD tv is an advantage for that since it won't burn in. Plasma apparently burns in BADLY... 16x9 on a 4x3 is letterboxed, those bars on the top and bottom. 4x3 on a 16x9 is pillar boxed, it gets bars on the right and left.
