I just had a wonderful thought about using the venturi vac pump: My air compressor has a regulated output. All I have to do it dial down the air pressure to set the vacuum wherever I want it. And the $8 vac pump is lightweight, compact, and I can probably find a way to mount it to the lid of my plastic hydraulic oil bucket.
