Its hard to tell, its hard plasticy now but I would have figured it for rubber 
20 years ago.
I think for now I'm going to goop it with RTV superblack, put it together and 
hope. It only takes 20 minutes or so to take it apart if it leaks...

are you talking about a gasket?  I have never heard of a seal that 
isn't round!  What shape is it?  If it is a gasket, put some silicone 
form a gasket on it and slap it together.  Or cut a gasket out of 
whatever material works best.  FLAPS sell gasket material.
