All,

Yesterday, my cell phone died {RIP}.

As I've been toying with the idea of writing Android Apps, I am
considering getting a new Android phone from Verizon (my cell
provider). Unfortunately, to use an Android phone with Verizon (who I
am locked into) will raise my monthly bill by nearly 50% (assuming they
don't force me to change my wife's line to a data plan as well, which
would nearly double my bill!).

This is not a recommendation, but there is a carrier that resells on the Verizon network (PagePlus) that supposedly lets you activate a smartphone without mandatory data. I've been looking into it off and on, but haven't tried it. There seem to be a lot of caveats about which phones work and such.
