Lots of replies! *Al: *I need to not loose the Windoze system - at least not yet. If that's what you meant, it has to remain useable for the moment. I Did get it back though - so if you are asking if I need help recovering it, I am OK there. Using it now for this in fact.
*Allen:* Fedora Live CD - very good thought. I will pull that down and make one tonight. Also the thoughts regarding RHEL are well received - and very sensible. Have to consider that - but my recent focus has been around Ubuntu and I probably will stick with that. There is no over-riding reason I have to though.... I am really supposed to be better at RHEL though (for work) and have been slacking there. I think your suggestion to load it (or at least the personal edition) makes a lot of sense. *Sean:* "I'd actually suggest going with the x86_64 version of it" Huh. I didn't notice that. PowerPC pages. No wonder that appeared a lot and seemed slightly out of context - given that I had assumed the context in the first place. Interesting - I go back and manually walk through the documentation - and I can't even FIND a set of install instructions! I found that by using a search function a few times on the Ubuntu pages. Weird. Thanks for pointing that out! Also for providing the direct link - Kind of curious where that came from, as a "casual" walk through the links in the documentation page does not immediately appear to have a direct reference. Ima go read that now ;-) *Mark:* It's a 32-bit P4 (I said P5 before, then got home and checked). There is a 64-bit system in the house, but my son has it ;-) I get relegated to the crappy old stuff. To be honest though, my wife keeps telling me I need New Stuff - I just haven't gotten around to picking out something reasonable. *Chris:* Got your phone number, am going through your details and we'll see how it goes tonight/this morning. I am off work at or around 0900 Sunday, don't have to work again until 2300 Wednesday. If I don't get anywhere with this, and you have the time, your experience would be greatly appreciated! We will have to see how things progress. This is not urgent and can wait if necessary - hope your GF is better and you can get your parents back up and online with no issues. Thanks everyone! I WILL get this - I'm not that focused on it up till now though and all the suggestions are a BIG help!
