ASUS M5A99FX PRO R2.0 AM3+ AMD 990FX SATA 6Gb/s USB 3.0 ATX AMD Motherboard with UEFI BIOS http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16813131851 Under high load (I ran several 'cpuburn' processes, one process per core so that all cores were 100% loaded), the northbridge on this board gets notably warm, but not "too" hot. I saved the full list of parts as a "wishlist", so I'll send this to you privately. [No need to spam the list with this unless people generally want to see it.] But I'll mention a couple of items... I chose a 6-core 95W AMD FX-6300 processor for lower thermal power dissipation. Choosing the RAM was probably the trickiest part -- ASUS has a RAM compatability list available, but if you want to be able to reach the theoretial 32 GB the board can accept then you end up having to choose RAM that _isn't_ on the compatability list. I ended up using (2 x 8GB) DDR3 1600 from Corsair [model CMZ16GX3M2A1600C10B], which work fine. I wanted the case to have a built-in carrying handle, and there aren't many models available that incorporate this. Ended up using this: http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16811139015 The case has nice cable management and is quiet, but it's a bit big. This box is a workstation for my Dad, and the main criteria were that it be quiet and reliable (thus it's not necessary for it to be super-fast). > I thought the most likely problem was that I damaged the CPU in the > process of transferring it between motherboards.
