Allow me to put my two and a half cents into this conver-
sation.
First, you *must* determine whether you are being singled out
or whether it is just something "brain dead," as stipulated. If
it is something automated and nothing bad is intended, then, all
you can do is either track down who is doing it and ask that it
is stopped, or do not leave your computer on 24/7, and ignore.
Now, if someone is singling you out (doing this pinging, to
you, on purpose), it does not matter whether the person is stalk-
ing you or is just acting like a bully. In either case, ignoring
will, probably, *not* stop this, because, if someone is targeting
you, that person has somthing invested in bringing you grief,
and gets satisfaction in thinking that you are squirming.
Before you do anything about this, you *must* determine whe-
ther you are *truly* being singled out. Does your system get
jammed up at other times, when you are on other sites? Does it
happen during certain times of the day and certain days of the
week? If you can say, "Yes," to these questions, you then have
to check to find out whether anything is going on with your
local phone company (Not meaning to be either a "goody two-shoes"
or totally pessimistic, but sometimes our problems are, in fact,
totally due to the local phone company, and sometimes they have
nothing to do with it.) If the phone company is given a clean
"bill of health," then you are left with dealing with either a
dumb program doing it, or someone, setting things up that way.
Now, if someone, indeed, is purposely singling you out, it
does not matter what you call it, it is the same, and, you have
a problem. I do suggest that you probably know this person. He
or she may not be someone with whom you deal, on a regular basis,
but, he or she is someone who has decided to target you, for
whatever reason is going through his or her sick mind. I use
the term, "sick," here, to describe someone who persists at
this, not someone who is doing a onetime "prank."
The exact way to rid youself of this pest will depend on how
intent the perpetrator is at harming you and for how long. I
can go into some more detail, with you, privately, if you wish.
Remember, before doing anything, first determine whether what is
happening is because you are connected to Amster, or through your
particular ISP, as enough people, when angered at an ISP have
tried to make is "hell" for the rest who use that ISP, even
though they have nothing to do with the problems that cause the
anger.
