I considered the first suggestion (minus the Das Boot theme) but any shell will be lacking other bits, namely: Sunburst (I do love the color) , big brakes, big fuel pump, body kit/hood, rollbar/harnesses/modified seats for harnesses, oil cooler/remote oil filter, low pro lights/shaved lenses, gauges, stereo. So a $1500 roller (or whatever) will take $5000+ (more yet if you paint it) to get to the same level I own not to mention the significant time involved. And that is assuming a well maintained car that doesn't need all new bushings, bearings, etc etc etc. I did seriously think about that (I have a buddy locally with a perfect donor.. a 'spare' 92 automatic with fresh red paint, bone stock with a ton of miles) but the other upgrades needed made it financially and schedulaly unrealistic. Cutting the Sub makes me a little queasy too, but I have faith I can do this properly and it will work out perfectly, and I am very happy with the car as it sits in regards to the other mods I have done to it. It is a very known commodity to me, and that makes this easier for me since I know it is rock solid before I start.
So, that said. what qualifies as "a heck of a deal"? Parting it out is less than a day of disassembly, so if that is the difference between $3500 and $5500, well.. no brainer. The motor will be the hardest to get rid of I bet, and is basically pointless without some sort of FI with it (I mean really, what is the motor without it.. 110hp?? pppbbbttt! Nobody will want that for any kind of money, and it's built for boost.). Just seems more logical to sell at least motor and FM2 kit together.. maybe that only means $3500, I don't know.. I know you never get 100% back on mods, but 40% is generally realistic. A running 1.6 with 65k miles on a professional rebuild is worth more than $500 alone, before you start adding in all the other mods to it. I certainly won't be offended if you guys slap me with some reality, so please, chime in with what you think is fair.. I need to get an idea of what to ask, and what you (my trusted peers) feel is the right ballpark. If it is a lot lower than I hope for, maybe I will buy a roller and swap it in then sell it, who knows.. but for now, just looking for a taste of reality. :) (Red October was quite funny, but the donor would have to have been underwater.. and maybe from Russia.. that narrows the possibilities significantly!) It would probably be easier to find a shell and do the V8 conversion on it. You can paint it yellow, too, or red and call it Red October, keeping your Das Boot theme. Otherwise you will probably have to part it. Anyone who wants that kind of detailed list of goodies would shy away from a used anything, for the most part. You'd have to make them a heck of a deal. I guess what I'm saying is you could probably get more parting it out.
