Ever since Microsoft bought the Visio product it has
gone through several transmutations. In my research, I
found the version nomenclature a bit
confusing--perhaps it was my mental capacity--but I
seem to remember that the distinction between
professional and other versions was not clearcut from
year to year. The latest version powerfully helps
computer network administrators. When I was looking
for a version that would help me with layout of a
bakery's floor, electrical and plumbing plans I
settled for an older version of Visio Technical bought
from Ebay. I saved money by going this route. But
clearly I was limiting my compatibility options by
using an older version.

There are some compatibility issues which the MS
comparison chart may not immediately clear up. I am
talking about reading and writing Visio files from and
to other Visio versions. Also, I recall that older
Visio versions may have problems on WinXP. I would
poke around with Google in addition to the excellent
MS version chart mentioned by Floyd.

Hope this helps.
