When Technical and Pro were introduced in Visio 4, Technical was aimed at
draughting and technical drawings, while Pro was aimed at the IT world for
diagramming databases and networks. Technical had the capability of reading
files from AutoCad, Pro did not. The content between the two packages was
different. Soon after it was released, there were many requests from people
who had bought Visio Pro for their IT, but needed Visio Tech to diagram
their computer room. Since all three (Std, Pro and Tech) used the same
program, it was easy to install Visio Tech over Visio Pro. The extra
functionality offered by Pro and Tech was implemented by extra stencil and
extra dlls, so installing Pro over Tech just replaced the common features
and then added the extras.

During one of the latest releases of Visio, they addressed this problem by
combining the features of Tech and Pro into a single package called Visio
Pro.

Visio can read any older version, but can only write in the current format
or the previous format. The format did not change for Visio 2002, so Visio
2003 can read all previous versions but only write in Visio 2003 and Visio
2000/2002 format.

All versions of Visio are capable of running under Windows XP. The most
commented about is Visio 5. Though there is a warning when it is installed,
Visio 5 will work under Windows XP. (Visio 5 was created before Windows XP,
so the Visio 5 setup procedure complains when it sees an OS it does not
know)
