Well, when the goon squad breaks in and steals my turned off laptop, it will have been off for several hours. And the magic secret parts of its memory will have been overwritten long ago as well. If they attempt to steal it when turned on, I throw my laptop into the bathtub full of water I keep next to my desk. And when they catch me on vacation in the Sahara, I push shift-ctrl-F7, which unmounts my encrypted parition, overwriting the key. Then I have my camel pee on the laptop. Problem solved.
