I've seen my share of broken WaveLAN cards and AP-2000 power supplies. Still, the new crappy WLAN devices probably have 10 times the failure rate and don't work too well even when not broken...
IME even with newer hardware, leaving it open and using IPSec, openssh etc. will be less painful. WPA still seems to be somewhat buggy in many devices.
