Hmm, ok i can understand that. If i had a nicely running productive system i`ll 
 be careful too.

One option i can think of is
1) Cloning the internal HD to an external USB/HD ( easy process with OSX 
internal Disk utility or Carbon Copy Cloner )
2) Upgrade from 10.4 to the latest 10.5.8 on the external HD
3) Booting from the external HD. 
    Holding the "Option" key during boot-up and the System Picker will appear 
which queries all mounted devices
    for bootable systems, returning a list of drives & what OS they have on 
them.
4) Install Mixxx on the external HD and look how it goes.

This way he could safely check if all goes well with the installed applications 
and even clone the external HD back to the internal HD for productive use.
