Neil:

Are you in the US? If your car came with a chip and you're in the US, then
you have a 2.0L. The 1.8L cars came with CIS-E and cannot be chipped. The
US 2.0L cars came with CIS-Motronic, and can be chipped. As another lister
suggested, look under the shift boot. At the top right-hand corner you
should find three electrical connectors. These are used to retrieve fault
codes from the Motronic brain. If you don't have Another way is to check
your VIN against one of the keys that are on the net. Again, if it's US and
truly a '90, then you have a 2.0L.

The loose wire is for the fan after-run thermo time switch. The
switch/sensor is on the front-left-hand corner of the head, mounted to one
of the cam cover bolts. When new, my car's wire was cut. I don't know why
the idiot owners/mechanics out there don't know what to do with this simple
wire.

Subject: New ride, minor glitches, couple mysteries

Just picked up a '91 GTi 16V, 67k miles, straight and cherry in and
out. Car
is reputed to be a 2.0L. Looks like all of them were that year,
however,
the "engine family" sticker under the hood refers to a 1.8, 1781cc,
etc. Are
they all that way, is the hood a replacement, or have I been had? Is
there
another way to verify engine size by block numbers or markings? The
motor
pulls nicely, even down low - seems to be more powerful than my '88
GLi 16V.

I also have a hesitation problem. The car came with the TT chip and
exhaust. I checked for air leaks like someone has suggested -
negative
result. Reset the timing by light, but no improvement.

Also, there's a brown wire that's unattached under the hood. It
comes from
the firewall and has a right-angle spade terminal attached to it
that looks
like it was pulled off a rivet type connection. When I ground it
out, the
rad fan comes on. My old Haynes manual has lousy wiring schematics
(time for
a Bentley). Fan still comes on when motor is hot enough. Can anyone
I.D this
wire? Hint: it was found laying around by the fuel distributor and
is not
long enough to reach anything on the front side of the block.

Sorry for all the questions all at once. I've been stuck in digest
mode after
joining with no way to post to the list (that I could see).

        TIA
        Neil
