Kris,

Go easy on saying that is a reliable car. Those are VERY fast and
incredible performing cars, but when they break, look out. Just a little
info on them; they are an interference motor like our 16v's (but when the
belt goes the motor is COMPLETELY blown- I've seen it personally, YUCK), and
the PTUs (Power Transfer Unit (Essentially a transfer case)) are prone to
fail and leak. Also, the power windows don't like to follow their track
very well and there are multiple TSBs on the Plymouth and Eagle versions of
that car. The clutches are known to be very grumpy for 2nd gear shifts as
well. This is a short list. A good car? Yes, definitely. A reliable car?
Depends on you definition, I suppose. Good for autocrossing, but I'd trust
your VW more as a daily driver.

One thing you MUST do is check for a timing belt recall. Even with it being
an interference motor, the engineers screwed up and the belts like to jump
and shear all the teeth off, and, BOOM there went the engine. I know for a
fact that there is one in '92, but there may be other years.

I can't say much as I just helped a buddy of mine buy one recently at an
auction, but I have the advantage of being able to cheat and have a Chrysler
buddy run the VIN for work done on it and number of owners (his is a
Plymouth) and I know that Chrysler will assist in timing belt issues as it
is a recall item.

Hope I didn't burst your bubble too much.

Brice

<<Funny stuff -I saw this on the DSM(mitsubishi eclipse style cars) list not
to long ago. Oh yeah I bought a 91 mitsu eclipse
turbo(GST) for my dailey commuter car. It killed me to buy it but its quick
very reliable and this means I can start ripping my
GTI apart and do "off road" things to it for club rallies -whoo hoo! Man my
friends are fucking with me now cause I rag on rice
boys so bad....
