Yes it does sound like a bad ignition (electrical) switch but it could also be the mechanical part of the system where you put the key into (key/lock cylinder) and not the electrical switch itself. After I replaced the ignition (electrical) switch my problem went away for a week or so then returned.

Be advised that my problem had slightly different symptoms than the ones described here. My VW would start and run fine then the engine would quit. When trying to restart the starter would crank fine but all the idiot lights would go out. I could usually get it to restart and run if I giggled the key in the lock cylinder. Finally, I removed the lock cylinder assembly from the steering column, checked it and found that it was not working properly all the time. I purchased a new assembly (complete with key) and have not
had any problems since.
