Greg,

I have replaced all the motor mounts with the help of a friend. Only
the tranny mount was difficult and we had to heat up the bolts before
they would let go. If the mount is bad you can see the engine lift and
then drop back down if you rev the engine. You can also carefully hold
down the brake and accelerate a little in reverse - the engine should
lift too much in the front if the front mount is bad. It's very hard
to tell visually if mounts are bad.

I replaced my front with a VW Motorsports mount which I later replaced
with a stock thinking it was bad - it turned out to be my rear mount
that was bad. I replaced the rear hydraulic mount with a solid mount
with poly inserts. Boy do I regret doing that. The car shakes inside
like crazy now. It's insane.

Subject: [a2-16v-list] bad engine mount?

Hey all,

91 Jetta GLI

Mechanic says I have a bad front engine mount? How best to know?

Is this something to tackle in the home garage? What is the precedure?

Do most people just replace with stock? Or something aftermarket? I
will likely only be replacing the front.

Thanks,
Greg
