I just dinged 160,000 miles last week. Still original piston rings, head
gasket, valves, and injectors. It leaks a little oil from the base of the
head when it sits, but I drive it smoothly and it hasnt even begun to smoke
yet.. not in the slightest. I wash it every 2 weeks and the 8 year old paint
job still has a nice gloss to it and thanks to foreverblack and armor-all,
the car only looks like its only 4-5 years old.
After bringing it out of a 2 year hibernation and the huge overhaul 18
months ago, engine runs strong and always starts right up. No reason to ever
retire it. Even if it develops problems, its cheaper than a new car and has
a little more 'old school' class. ... that and though you would never know
looking at the car unless I showed you the title, it was totaled 9 months
after it was bought new; so it'll never sell for as much as its worth to me.

TRue.. I am now 16v-less.. Using my GLI as a daily driver (130mi r/t
commute) was neither cost-effective nor maintenance- worthy.. It just
became a touch too expensive for the routine...
