The axles don't need to be completely removed BUT it's much easier if you do 
that.  The biggest hindrance is clearing the axle flanges - IIRC, the pumpkin 
needs to be rotated up which is why the strap method works so much better.  


You've been around these cars enough - figure on a couple of hours to R&R the 
trans.  Once you get the removal figured out, reinstalling should be much 
faster.
