Pull the driveshafts out and get yourself a new set of seals and bearings.  The 
job can be done with the gearbox still in the car.  Talk to Collin again about 
it,  It is a helluva lot less work than pulling the gearbox.  There are a few 
special tools you would need but can probably fabricate them.  It has been a 
while since I did them but the Bentley was pretty good about outlining it.  If 
not, just Google "changing VW gearbox flange seals" and see what you 
get.......Jack
