I like this idea a lot, though I expect that Android users do most of their location lookups from apps (like Google Maps or Yelp), not mobile web pages. So we could also show the stumbler opt-in message that next time Fennec is opened after the passive location provider detects another app using Android's location API.

I hope Fennec's redesigned First Run experience considers a similar delayed approach for other opt-in questions.

I think I proposed this to dougt long ago. We can report Wi-Fi access points from Firefox desktop, but we can't report a location because we do not want to incorporate location results from Google's Location Service.

However, even Wi-Fi APs without locations is *somewhat* useful because we could correlate new APs as neighbors to known APs. If Firefox reports that it sees "Mozilla Guest" and "Mozilla Mobile" and our MLS database knows about "Mozilla Guest", it can assume that "Mozilla Mobile" is nearby.

I also suggested that Firefox desktop report traceroutes so Mozilla could build a map of the internet's network topology. That data might be useful for building our own GeoIP database. :)
