What setup is working / recommended? Or should I better develop on a
physical Android device?

I'm not sure I'd /recommend/ it, but I regularly build Fennec in x86 mode and run it in an Android 16 / 4.1.2 x86 emulator with Intel HAX enabled. I did this yesterday, for example, in order to screencap QA details about custom Firefox Accounts servers.

This is all on Mac OS X. I'm pretty sure I followed another tutorial before finding our very own gbrown's

One wrinkle, exposed by |adb logcat|, was that I needed to "Use host GPU" in my AVD settings.
