Apache::Request

I get the following error on 
my $i = Apache::Request->instance($r);

Can't locate object method "instance" via package "Apache::Request"

Why is that? Is the method not available? Are the docs outdated?
Any comments welcomed... :)
I am running mod_perl/1.22...
