I had a bit of flexible duct hose laying around of similar diameter and
convolutions to the spring that I cut to length and angled at the bottom. I
slit down its length and held in place with a couple of zip ties.  Has lasted 3
years so far

I'd made some up last night using "Lizard Skins" Lizard Skins are made to
protect Mountain Bike Telescoping Fork Stanchions. They are neoprene (relaively
thin) pieces that are wrapped around the  - in our case spring - and then
velcro together to fasten. Not sure how well they will work, but if nothing
else they will keep excessive grease off the braking surfaces!
