If we could have  railway system as good as that in most of Europe, it
would be splendid indeed. Unfortunately for me to use the railway for my
work would be either impossible (e.g. I can't get to Exeter before 09:00 in
the morning) or ruinously expensive (std return to Paddington is £146.00).

Another problem with the railways is that they suffer from constant delays
caused by 'signalling problems' - i.e. cable theft.
