Mmm, you may be correct Owen! As I recall with the LMS at least, on the main line there was little option other than compartment stock. My understanding is that the GWR and probably others introduced open carriages as something of a novelty and these became more popular as time went by.
I imagine that by dispensing with compartments, the weight of the carriages came down which must have provided an additional incentive for the railways. Richard. Spotmog.
