Well said, Richard.
When we bought our 4/4 sixteen years ago I was enthusiastic enough and
physically fit enough to fiddle around with it. I was still a Jaguar owner
then and Jaguar Driver magazine ( the JDC club mag.) always had excellent
technical articles every month. Miscellany, by comparison, was very
disappointing from that point of view. It still is. On the other hand,
Morgans are far, far simpler mechanically than Jags. Being a member of the
JDC gave me a substantial discount on insurance which more than offset the
membership fee. The same is true with the MSCC.
When we bought our present house eleven years ago, one of the extras I
insisted on was a pit in the garage so I could work on the Morgan. It was
excavated to exactly the right depth so that I could stand up underneath the
4/4 and not quite bash my head on its underside. I can still get into the
pit, but getting out presents a major challenge! So I don't do a lot of work
on either of my Mogs these days.
But I still enjoy driving them and enjoying my 4-year-old grandson's delight
at playing in them. As soon as he's through the front door, he drags me to
the garage and says, "Let's go in the Morgans". "Let's see the engine" - he
can name most of the main external bits thereof. I live in hope that there
is yet another generation who will enjoy Mogs as I have done.
I shall remain a member of the MSCC while I am a Morgan owner, even though I
have only attended one National Committee Meeting (doing so involves a 900
mile round trip and at least one night in a hotel) and think it unlikely I
shall do so again. I'm on the committee of JockMog, the Scottish Centre of
the club, and we have plenty to keep us amused up here.
I have many friends in the club, from all over the place. If you don't live
in England or Wales, there is a strong argument that some of the benefits of
the MSCC aren't available to you, so the you might consider that the
membership fee might better be spent on a decent bottle of claret or vintage
Port. The choice is yours.
Owen.

There is a lot, lot more to the Morgan Sports Car Club than just a magazine,
I just don't know what some members expect.
If you just look and see what the Car Club has to offer, from reductions on
insurance, engine oils and breakdown cover, to fantastic deals on travel,
the organisation of events such as car racing , sprinting, hill climbing ,
car trials, gymkhanas, autosolos,(this is a sports car club remember), even
discounts on attendance at race days, then I reckon you get a pretty good
deal for what you pay. For heavens sake, some of you will pay the annual
subscription on a single bottle of wine if the 'status' of some of the
members is taken into account!
You call it a dining club and a social club? Spot on! I have just spent a
weekend with 60 other like-minded Morgan folks on a run from Southport to
Hornsea. If this sort of event does not embody what a sports car club is
about, then more words will fail me!
This Club is democratically run. If you want the Club to be steered in a
direction: go for office! Attend the regular NCM's, stand up and speak: it
is your right! But please don't moan on a forum and expect the world to
change.
